Ace Anan Ankomah brings together over 80 Ghanaian gospel singers and musicians for 'Twists Of Zamar'

Renowned lawyer and ‘music hobbyist’ Ace Anan Ankomah has released his latest album dubbed "Twists of Zamar”, a contemporary rendition of Ghanaian songs and hymns.

Ace Anan Ankomah has been a prominent figure in the Ghanaian gospel music industry for several years. He was with Joyful Way Incorporated for ages. His blockbuster song ‘Wahenni’ is reported to have been translated into about 30 African languages. He released his first album “Flavours of 50: My Yadah” in 2017.

"Twists of Zamar" features twenty-two (22) tracks, each embodying a unique melodious fusion. From jazz to beautiful twists of your favorite hymns, guitar renditions, and electronic and ambient sounds. The album has collaborations with several known gospel musicians from Ghana the likes of Kofi Dua-Anto, popularly known as KODA, Joe Mettle, Calvis Hammond, Nii Okai Okai, Josephine Anan-Ankomah, and Professor Esther Acolatse, to discoveries like Neo Ankama-Asamoah, Nana Ama Ofori, Naana Asiedu and Ace’s own lawyer-daughters, Niakoaa and Ohemaa. It features over 80 other singers, instrumentalists and technical production people. Ace used five different recording studios right here in Ghana, including his basement studio that he calls ‘The ManCave’. Asked which of the several musicians stood out for him, Ace was quick to mention young guitarist Jesse ‘Jay Squid’ Boateng, saying ‘the world should watch out for him.’

In an exclusive interview with Gh Gospel News Online, Lawyer Ace Ankomah shared the inspiration and theme behind the project. "With ‘Twists of Zamar,' I was looking at more contemporary renditions of some of our hymns. So, it has more jazz which is quite out of the ordinary for our hymns. That is the reason behind the name – ‘Twists of Zamar’. I also wanted to put some music out there so I decided to work with some of the musicians I have mentored and worked with over the years. There was no pressure, we worked at our own pace to produce this”.

On which track is his favorite, Lawyer Ankomah said “You know, all the songs are unique and have a particular twist so it's difficult to pick one. Maybe the track Asher. However, this means everyone will get a favorite, if you love jazz, funk, highlife, ballads, you will get your pick”.

Early reviews of Twists of Zamar, praise the album for its creativity and describe it as a project that redefines contemporary gospel music in Ghana. TVO Lamptey describes, “This work is on another level! My vote for the Album of the Year - and I am being honest here! The level of musicianship, dexterity in delivery, and collaboration - par excellence! Professor Nii Adotey Abrahams said, “Love the way you went from contemporary to jazz!!! Come on now!!” Others have described “it as a soothing and refreshing and a new jam in the mornings!”.

"Twists of Zamar” is already making waves and is available on all major streaming platforms – Apple Music, Spotify, Boomplay, and others. And Ace is going to distribute about 200 pendrives containing the music, for free!
